The Five Players Who Make Chelsea Tick

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

While Chelsea’s team is packed with skill all across the field there are a few key players that make the team perform at the level they do. This article outlines the players that without them Chelsea wouldn’t be able to compete.

1. JOHN TERRY (England, Central defender)

Terry sets the benchmark with which the other players adhere to, captaining both club and country. A tough, uncompromising and brave defender, he has incredible skill and a technically sound style. Always a danger at set pieces and never afraid to lead by example, he is a fine example of a strong team leader and an outstanding choice as captain of the club and his country.

2. ASHLEY COLE  (England, Left back)

He may not be the most popular player amongst Arsenal fans, although he is still considered by many to be the best left back in the soccer world. Certainly he has struggled for form and confidence at times, but at his best his marauding runs down the left and quality balls into the box are only matched by his ability to shut down some of the world’s best players. In games against him the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been kept relatively quiet. That’s no fluke, not many other left backs could do the job.

3. MIKAEL ESSIEN (Ghana, Central midfielder)

Essien’s injury last season showed how sorely he could be missed, despite the team being filled with outstanding midfielders. Essien helps balance the midfield. With first class defensive skill and a high work rate not to mention a great intelligence for the game. With a powerful shot from a distance and the ability to go forward at the right time making him an asset to the team. His role within the team defiantly makes the 24.4 million pounds it cost to transfer him seem like a bargin.

4. FRANK LAMPARD (England, Central Midfielder)

Every team needs a midfielder like Lampard who can weigh in with plenty of goals, if they are to be successful. Lampard is one of the best around. He has shown a great return to form under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti and as a result his goal tally has been increasing dramatically. Frank Lampard is a vital source of attacking strength due to his accurate shooting and ability to link play with his strikers.

5. DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast, Attacker)

Considered by many to be the best striker in the world at the moment, and its hard to argue the point considering his current form. Didier Drogba wearing the new Chelsea soccer kit makes all goalkeepers fear the upcoming game. He may argue with officials and opposing players and fall over at the slightest touch but at times he can be unstoppable. His goal scorring ability and excellent presence are vital for Chelsea, and at times he has carried the team on his back. He alone may end Manchester United’s dominance of the Premier League.

All You Need To Know About Soccer Field Dimensions

Friday, January 29th, 2010

When it comes to soccer field measurements, it is worth noting that the dimensions are uniform, regardless of the level of play. According to FIFA, for professional events which involves 11 players for each one team, the soccer field must have a span of 100 to 130 yards and a width between 50 to 100 yards. Soccer fields in England are believed to be smaller than that consequential to more physical games. In contrast, in South America, the fields are much bigger which provides more room and time on the ball.

For recreational soccer, playing on a smaller soccer field is recommended. By doing this, players will of course make the game enjoyable and learning is more achievable. The dimension of the playing field should be proportional to the size of the player. In a large field, recreational players would waste their time running and become tired by half time. As a result, the kicks will be much longer.

Another drawback of playing recreational soccer in a large field is that teaching strategies and team play is unlikely. Smaller soccer fields are finest for average players who are slower and be short of stamina, which is usually common in 50% to 75% of recreational players.

The Penalty Area

This is the area where the goalkeeper usually uses their hands and fouls are punished. It includes the penalty spot, which is 12 yards from the goal and the six-yard box 6 yards more from the goal. The top portion of this box includes a small arc commonly referred to as “the D.” It has a radius of 10 yards and has no purpose in the rules of soccer but simply serves as a guide for the players.

The Goal

In spite of of the level of play, the goal has a uniform measurement of 8 feet tall and 24 feet wide.

Center Circle

It divides the soccer field into two areas and is where the kickoff takes place. No player is allowed to cross their area until kickoff commences. It has a 10-yard circle within it and only the two players kicking off is allowed to stand in the inner circle.

Although soccer field measurements remain unchanged regardless of the players competing, the rules of the game allows the dimensions to be smaller for female players, persons with disabilities, or those who are below 16 years old and more than 35 years of age.

Soccer Coaching Drills

Have you ever thought why kids get so excited about soccer coaching drills? They do not necessarily look at it like a game but a session full of excitement and energy. So it becomes a sort of challenge for a coach to make youth soccer drills so interesting that kids just cannot wait to get to the field.

This can be done in a lot of different ways. Initiate a variety of games, entertaining drills, and fun activities that will encourage them to compete with each other. You must understand that soccer is a team-game. So it is imperative to incorporate sports which persuade kids to play as a team.

One of the best soccer coaching strategies to get started with kids is fun soccer conditioning. This not only guides players to remain focused on the game but also utilize their energy positively.

To begin with, instruct the kids to go for a short session of running or jogging that will warm up their bodies. Ensure that they do not overdo it. Since kids are a power house of energy, they may easily get overboard without realizing their limit. Small breaks are necessary in between. This way they will stay energized and alert. Take the time to engage with them by talking about the following work outs.

Soccer Drills

Subsequently, engage them in group or individual activities. Take an example, the player who arrives first starts juggling the ball. The players then join him as they come by. In this manner, the entire group gets involved in the activity. If the number of players increases in a group, it is best to make subgroups for the soccer coaching drills.

There are so many other exercise such as soccer golf where the players try to aim to a far-away object. Another great activity is soccer volleyball where the kids play in a restricted area without letting the ball touch the ground. These soccer coaching exercises are a great way to introduce a range of activities in a session.

In addition, teach the players to dribble with the ball as also use different body parts except hands. Do not be too pushy. Remember that they are kids and will learn with time. As the player gets ready to handle the ball, shout the name of the body part that the player should use in handling the ball. Then the player uses only that body part. This makes them attentive and focused.

Circuit training is another interesting drill. It pays a lot with large number of players. Split the players in to smaller groups and assign them a number of tasks. These activities should be carried out continually with only small intervals in between.

Start testing them immediately. If you are innovative, you can create new fun-filled and exciting activities every day.

Now it is up to you to pass these soccer coaching drills to the kids so that they can use them on the field in their sessions. You can benefit from the mass of resources and tips available on our youth soccer coaching community pages by joining it.
