Italy’s Soccer Future

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Marcelo Lippi’s current Italian squad has been criticised by several soccer pundits as being too old.  The Italian team is undoubtedly old, with 30-year old Vincenzo Iaquinta, 31 year-old Andrea Pirlo, 32 year olds Gianluigi Buffon, Gennaro Guttuso, and Antonio Di Natale, 33 year-olds Mauro Camoranesi and Gianluca Zambrotta, and 36-year old Fabio Cannavaro all likely to have to be replaced by Lippi or Azzuri’s next manager by the Brazilian World Cup in 2014.

Lorenzo De Silvestri    Defender     (Fiorentina)    Aged 22
De Silvestri, who stands at just over six feet tall, comes from Lazio, where he recently served as fullback.    When he moved to Fiorentina in 2009, De Silvestri came into his own in the form that served him in representing Italy from U16 to U21. A marauding, powerful full back, he gets forward well and looks to be a possible long term replacement for Gianluca Zambrotta in the national team.

Davide Santon        Defender    (Inter)        Aged 19
Able to play down either flank, Santon is a hugely talented young defender who made 28 appearances for Inter this season as well as five appearances already for the Azzuri. Santon’s energy is boundless; his energy on the pitch has earned him a comparison to Paolo Maldini by Italian head coach Marcelo Lippi. We can expect to see the immensely talented Santon in the Italy’s next few squads for major finals events.

Mario Balotelli        (Striker)    (Inter)        Aged 19
Inter’s hot headed and often temperamental striker can play anywhere in attack or as a winger and has been heralded as one of the brightest hopes wearing the official italy soccer jersey for a generation.  Batelli’s run-ins with both fans and management only serve to distract from his excellent record: the player scored twenty goals in 59 games and notched 6 and 16 for the U21 Italian set. His time will surely come in the Euro 2012 qualifiers when Italy are going to need a new look strike force.

Federico Macheda    (Striker)    (Man Utd)    Aged 18
Despite Macheda’s failure to make first team at Old Trafford, soccer pundits agree that Man United’s striker could make a name for himself in the 2010-2011 season, and even gain the attention of Azzuri management. Macheda’s strength as a striker coupled with his intelligence gives him a boost in scoring goals. His particular talent is scoring with his back to the goal, and he has been capped at U21 for Italy; if Macheda makes a difference in the first team for United, he should end up with a spot on the Italian national squad.

Antonio Candreva    (Midfielder)    Udinese    Aged 23
Candreva just may be the only replacement for Italy’s great Andrea Pirlo. The Udinese midfielder follows in the footsteps of Pirlo’s creative play, owning any position on the midfield.

Reasons South Africa Is Hosting The 2010 FIFA World Cup

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

On Friday the 11th of June 2010 the whole of africa will join the many soccer fans the world over as the day an African has the honor to host the FIFA World Cup. For eighty years now the FIFA World Cup host nations have alternated between Europe and the Americas Exactly how is the venue for the cup decided upon?Currently, the policy for selection is that any country can bid to be the venue for the World Cup guaranteed that their continent hasn’t hosted it in the past two years making Africa a good candidate. South Africa had a narrow loss against Germany in the 2006 bidding with 12 votes to 11 as the final tally. For the 2010 World Cup however, all countries that bid were African the top three being South Africa, Morocco and Egypt. Morocco lost to South Africa by four events making this a momentous event. Technically, this is why South Africa is hosting this years World Cup but is the counntry able to hold such a big event? If you’d ask me, I’d say they surely are, here are my reasons:

* They’ve got a great team- that simple fact makes them deserving to have the great privilege of hosting the cup.If you’d ask me, having a World Cup in a country whose team isn’t even above average would be a disgrace. Remember back in 1950,1978 and 1990 when Brazil, Argentina and Italy hosted the world cup? First class teams! It would make sense to have South Africa join the list.

* Awesome stadiums-South Africa constructed four brand new stadiums just for the 2010  FIFA World Cup. There’s a jungle-inspired stadium with zebra like stripes, another with mind-blowing lighting, one with a detractable glass roof and yet another that was constructed to look like the South African flag. What more could you ask for?

* The perfect weather-  if there’s one thing South Africa is known for-aside from its wildlife, it would be the weather. It will be winter time when the World Football Tournament will take place. Don’t worry, our favorite players won’t freeze to death, South Africa’s winter temperature at midday, is warmer than most countries daily summer temperature! The average temperature is predicted to be 20 degrees celsius at midday which is better for an athelet’s body compared to higher temperatures. Good weather means higher stamina and endurance..

* The continent alone- soccer is no doubt in every African’s heart and Africa is known to be the place where civilization begun. So what better place to have countries from the four corners of the earth meet? More so since South Africa has used soccer as a means of unity and force against apartheid in  the Mandela era. Holding the finals in Soweto, the center of South African soccer will make this even more than a sporting  one but more importantly a very historical one.

In my opinion, no controversy in the past four years can change the  fact that South Africa is the best place for  the 2010 FIFA World Cup and everyone should be proud that for the first time in  history, Africa is holidng a sporting event this big.

Soccer Players Do Not Get Sufficient Respect

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Most Americans have a diverse attitude toward the sport of soccer than folks from around the rest from the globe. One can begin with the name of the sport itself. We call it soccer, while the rest with the globe calls it football, however it actually doesn’t end there.

Soccer players do not get the same type of esteem here that they do in other countries, and I consider that’s very unfortunate. Some of the finest athletes inside the world are soccer players, and as the sport continues to grow in popularity inside the United States, I hope that more Americans begin to understand how talented they’re.

I was in England about 10 years ago and happened to see a prominent professional soccer player in London. The guy was practically mobbed, and it took much more than an hour to make it into the restaurant exactly where he was originally headed.

On an additional occasion when I was in England, a team called Bradford City defeated the perennial powerhouse Liverpool. The next day, the town actually had a parade for its soccer players, and they were treated like heroes as they rode on floats down the main street within the city.

You can find, of course, the flip sides of those stories, exactly where goalkeepers who give up the winning score have their lives threatened, or worse. There are also brawls that break out at soccer stadiums that usually give a black eye for the sport, but I think that speaks much more about the passion that fans have for soccer than anything else.

Soccer players are among the world’s finest athletes, and must receive that exact same type of respect that other athletes receive.

I am not certain if individuals do not recognize the amount of function that goes into the sport and why it’s lagging in American popularity for the degree that it can be, however it takes a lot of difficult function and skill to play soccer. An athlete must not only have tremendous stamina and coordination, but also have exceptional footwork, which takes years to develop.

Soccer was once referred to as “the beautiful game,” and it is certainly just that. Watching a excellent soccer match, to me, is like listening to a beautiful symphony; it can be simply breath-taking, and something you feel fortunate to have witnessed.

I am not certain if soccer players will ever get the type of respect they deserve in the United States. It seems sometimes like baseball, football, basketball and hockey have a stronghold within the country, and if any other sports do break into that realm, it’s normally golf, tennis or NASCAR.

Whilst there are numerous excellent athletes in distinctly American sports like baseball and football, I consider it can be important to remember that soccer players are playing the world’s game, and that actually must count for something.
